Abstract
After leaving the body, man’s soul continues to live in purgatory, a world between this world and the Hereafter. According to verses and hadiths, the living conditions of the dead in purgatory are such that, in their graves, they are able to hear the living. However, following the thoughts of Ibn Taymiyyah al-Harrani and Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Najdi, Wahhabis believe that the dead have no connection with the living. Misinterpreting some verses, such as انَّکَ لاتُسْمِعُ الْمَوْتَى (28:80) and وَ ما أَنْتَ بِمُسْمِعٍ مَنْ فِی الْقُبُورِ (35: 22), Wahhabis believe in the inability of the dead to hear the living in their graves. On the other hand, Wahhabis find the reasons in the Holy Book and Sunnah for the hearing ability of the dead as miracles and untrue. Sometimes, Wahhabis criticize the reliability of the narrations, while Ibn Taymiyyah and some Wahhabi figures find these narrations correct. This descriptive-analytic article examines the arguments of Wahhabism. For this purpose, the article describes, analyzes, and criticizes the arguments, and finally presents some arguments provided by the righteous predecessors that prove that the interpretations of Wahhabism are contrary to those of the predecessors who confirm the ability of the dead to hear the living
